What is Mac OS X?

Good question!  It is safe to say I do not, nor will I ever, possess the knowledge required to understand that article.  I'm a PC, so I do understand that unless I should decide to become a Mac, I'll never have to worry about the Mac OS X.  That is good, because if I have to understand that article to be a Mac, it'll never happen.

  1. Haha! Melissa, I recently made the switch to a Mac and didn't glean much from that article either. Not exactly a good representation for how user friendly Macs are. I thought I would always be a PC myself, but I may never go back.

  2. I have to agree with Melissa here. The Mac OS X articles were beyond comprehension, but thankfully I too am a PC and will never have to deal with the complexity of that operating system.

  3. I agree with Caitlin that as a Mac user I did not understand this article either. Using Mac OS X is really not difficult and in some ways is easier than Windows. However, I have been using the system for 4 years. At first certain things are strange, like the buttons for closing, minimizing, and maximizing webpages on the left of the screen instead of on the right, but after time you do not even notice the differences. Also, the article makes a point about the one button mouse on a Mac, which is apparently annoying to Windows users. After you get used to the keyboard commands, using the mouse is just as easy on a Mac as on any other computer. I don't even think twice about it anymore. Just like Caitlin, I don't think I will ever go back to using Windows.

  4. Heh. I'm with Caitlin & Megan on this one! I've recently changed from PC to Mac, and barring the occasional keyboard confusion, it's been a surprisingly easy shift. The best part about the switch has been how customizable the Mac laptop is. The touchpad and ability to customize what the different actions do -- both make moving between programs so easy. But. The detailed history and technical discussions? Definitely over my head... Funny how easy-to-use the stuff is, given how lost I am trying to follow their explanations.

  5. I also found this article too technical to understand! I was only able to glean the answer to the question---that it's an Apple operating system and move on. Chances are, our future library computers will be pcs.

  6. While I was able to take away a basic understanding of Mac OS X from this article, I still feel (like many!) that I am missing a lot of information about Macs. I suppose if I were more familiar with Macs in general, I would be able to pick up on more of the details presented in the article. I still found the information helpful, though, and I'll be curious to reread the article after listening to the lecture on software. Understanding technical language and details often takes a few reads, and I've noticed that diagrams do really make a significant difference as they provide helpful visual representation.

  7. I agree with everyone about the Mac OS X articles that they were difficult to understand. I'm a PC user for economic reasons and so have only used Mac a few times. All I know is that I used a mouse to click buttons and the right stuff happened. That's good enough for me.
